Manga Artist in Trouble for Not Paying Taxes

Nekokurage (real name Erika Ikeda) draws pictures for a story called “The Apothecary Diaries.” A court said she didn’t pay her taxes and gave her a fine. Nekokurage won’t go to jail if she behaves well for three years. (Nekokurage tax evasion)

Not Paying Taxes

Nekokurage didn’t tell the tax office about all the money she made. She made a lot of money, about US$1.6 million, but didn’t pay taxes on some of it. She used the money to buy houses.

Saying Sorry

Nekokurage said she didn’t mean to avoid paying taxes. She promised to pay all the money she owed. She told everyone on Twitter that she didn’t know she had to pay those taxes but paid them in 2022 after the tax office told her to.

Drawing the Manga

Nekokurage started drawing the manga for “The Apothecary Diaries” in May 2017. It’s a popular story, and the 13th book came out on March 25. You can read it in English too.

The Anime Show

The story also became a TV show (anime) in October 2023 and had two seasons. You can watch it on Crunchyroll, and there will be a new season in 2025.
